This is an industry which has been revived after 39 years in 2010 with the movie Akh Daleel Loolech. Kashmir is considered as heaven on earth and was a favorite spot for romantic shoots. But due to the militancy and the cross border terrorism, this place is not accessible. A lot of movies were never made here because it is basically a very poor state and so they haven’t been able to raise enough finances for movies. The last movie to be released here was Habba Khatoon in 1967.

A lot of movies have been shot in Kashmir and have stories based on the Kashmir issue. Hritik Roshan Mission Kashmir was shot in Kashmir. Movies like LOC too had portions shot in different locations of Kashmir. Songs are often shot in Shikara’s too give it the Kashmiri feel. Hope the makers in this area just decide to not get stopped by the terrorism and make more movies in Kashmir so that the world can see the natural beauty of this place.
Yester years star Waheeda Rehmann visited Kashmir after 26 years and this is what she had to say ” Kashmir used to be the favorite shooting spot for all Indian filmmakers in 50′s, 60′s and 70′s and we’ve always loved to be here. I’m a little disheartened to see the condition of the Dal Lake, whose waters used to be crystal clear. Encroachments all along Dal, too many people and lack of hygiene among the people have spoiled my mood. The silver lining, however, is that normalcy is returning to Kashmir, which could be a harbinger of a new era for the people of the valley”.

Kashmir has given Bollywood stars like Kiran Kumar, Anupam Kher, Sanjay Suri, Jeevan and a new star Rahul Bhatt. Onkar Aima is another famous personality from Kashmir. Child artist turned hero Kunal Khemu too is a Kashmiri gift to Bollywood.
Marathi Film Industry

This industry has its base both in Mumbai and Pune. This is an industry which is being supported by the Maharashtrian government. Due to Bollywood this state had ignored their own regional industry and so now the government has made it a rule that all multiplexes and theatres have to show Marathi movies. These multiplexes which show Marathi movies are given many subsidies. It’s a nice way to motivate the theatre owners to show regional movies.

Marathi movies are made with a lot of reality and their song and dance sequences are very lively. A lot of Marathi stars make it big in bollywood too. One theatre owner screened the movie Shwaas for an entire week without charging a single penny because it was such a meaningful movie.

The Indian film industry is called Bollywood because it is based in Bombay. Everybody who goes to Bombay or now known as Mumbai wants to see this ever growing industry and its stars.

Movies in India are basically made with a lot of spices. In India a movie has to have song, dance, romance, thrill, suspense, comedy, action, family drama etc. People in India work for ten hours a day and that too during the main part of the day and so many of them return to a home with no entertainment. The only available entertainment is movies. Whether a business tycoon or a cycle rickshaw driver all want to watch movies. So when a movie is made the makers have to keep in mind both the masses and the classes.

Indian cinema has improved drastically and now the audience is very mature too. They still want song and dance but not the running around tree sequences. So now there is a new market for item songs. This is where a nice fast track is made only for a great dancer to dance and increase the sales. Some of the top songs have been Babuji zara dhere chalo, khallas etc.

Movies were made particularly for the masses and the multiplex crowd. But now the viewers want to see good movies with great stories. Earlier the hero carried the entire movie on his shoulders but now the load is evenly spread. A movie will do well even if you don’t have a great star cast but have a great story and your actors do a job. A good example for this would be Khosla Ka Ghosla. There is nobody you can call the hero of the film but it’s realistic and humorous.

In three hours the audience wants to laugh, cry and be excited and so it’s a tough task for the directors but then hats off to all Indian directors as they come up with something spicy enough to fulfill the needs of all types of viewers.

Each movie has the main story and a lot of other small stories that build around it. At times in stories there may not be any scope for comedy. A lot of directors use other characters and bring in another funny plot. This comedy has no link with the movies. In the past people accepted this kind of comedy too but nowadays the audience accepts comedy only when it’s a part of the main story.

People who want to watch emotions are very particular about the quality of the emotions too. If you can’t cry or deliver the dialogues properly the audience rejects the star immediately. The stars have to be convincing enough. This is where the director’s ability is tested. The comedy has to be timed properly and the tears have to be realistically shed.

Movies in India have been made with a lot of respect for family values and traditions. Every movie which shows any function has to do it in the right way. If there is a wedding song in a movie it not only becomes a hit. It becomes a part of every Indian wedding. Movies like Hum Saath Saath Hain and Hum Apke Hain Kaun have been very very big hits because each and every scene of the movie is actually what happens in joint families and in weddings.

A movie when made in India has to be made in such a way that both a 5 year kid and an 85 year old grand father both have to enjoy it. It has to have a great story, touching performances, lovely music, breath taking locations, great dance steps and of course a really bad villain whom the hero has to bash up even if he is on the death bed.

This is true bollywood ishtyle where anything can happen. The hero can beat up any number of guys. The heroine can cry without glycerin. The villain is always ugly to look at. The police will never reach on time to save people. It’s only up to the hero to do all the running around, saving and bashing up. The heroines will always be wearing great makeup even if its in the middle of the night. Mother in laws can’t be good and the daughter in law will only worry about everybody else’s happiness and not hers. This is apna bollywood with all these errors but still it is the biggest film industry in the world. Nearly thrice the number of movies is made each year than the number of days in a year. If you are a movie buff then there is no place like bollywood because there is nothing that you can’t find here.

Mehmood is the first thought that will emerge when you think of comedy in bollywood. Comedy has been a vital part of any movie and a lot of movies have been made only on comedy. Star like Ashok Kumar was a natural comedian. In the past the entire movie would be a comedy and there were directors like Hrishikesh Mukherjee who were specialists in these kinds of movies. Then slowly comedy began taking a back seat and today comedy is only a part of the movie. At this time comedians like Johnny Lever, Asrani and Kadar Khan have made a mark for themselves.

During the 80s and early 90s it was the time for stars like Govinda who made a fortune by doing only comedy movies. Now directors like Deepak Tijori tried their hands at comedy and made a remake of a Tamil film but that too bombed at the box office. Director Priya Darshan is the only one who is churning out comedy after comedy and that too all hits. The audience loves Shah Rukh for his comedy in movies like Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge and Pardes. Salman Khan too did good to his sinking career with comedy film Maine Pyar Kyon Kiya.

Mithun Chakraborthy is the hero who has won the national award the most number of times. He has won it thrice. Javed Akhtar is another star who has won the filmfare so many times. Singers Alka Yagnik and Sonu Nigam too have different records in the history of filmfare awards. Rishi Kapoor and Hritik Roshan are the only two stars who have won the best actor award for their debut films itself. Aamir Khan is a star who doesn’t believe he needs an award to reward his talent. So he doesn’t come to these award functions. He too is a star who has won many nominations but has never accepted any awards.

Rakesh Roshan is lucky for Hritik and any movie they work together in is a hit and they walk of with many awards. Karan Johars lucky mascot is Shah Rukh Khan. Shah Rukh Khan’s lucky mascot is his wife Gauri. The alphabet K is lucky for both Karan Johar and Rakesh Roshan and so all their movies come out with their first alphabet as K. Himesh Reshammiya’s lucky mascot is his cap and so he is seen with a cap always. Kajol is lucky for Karan and so even if she is not acting in the movie, she plays a small guest appearance at least.
Once somebody wins an award they want to repeat it again and again. A lot of preparation goes into all this. Pundits are consulted. Numerologists are consulted for the name and release of the movie. Some stars are so superstitious that they don’t work with a co star with whom they have given a flop. Then there are many stars that are doing everything possible to win an award but then somehow they have never been able to win an award. Salman is one actor who has given so many hits and blockbusters but still nobody has recognized his talent.

Talking about awards, if you have not been able to win awards then the next best option is to perform in these shows. A lot of stars perform in these shows. Salman and Akshay Kumar are regulars. Hritik dancing on stage is different in each show wonder how he and his choreographers manage to pull it off each time. Kareena Kapoor too is always there to perform in one show or the other. Karishma and Madhuri performing is a real treat pleasure. Aishwarya is a natural dancer who will make your heart skip a beat with ease. Shahid who is a student of Shaimak Davar is another great performer. This year Yester years dance goddess Helen did a small dance with Kareena on their common song Yeh Mera Dil Pyar Ka Deewana. An award function means you can see a lot of stars, their performances and the new clothes and fashions.

Khaddama- A Desert Journey is what it was expected to be, a poignant tale of a housemaid working in the gulf. We could see the good effort and hard work from the begin to end of the film.

Kamal trying to tell the story of Aswathy (Kavya Madhavan), who reaches the Gulf to work as a Khaddama (housemaid). It’s Usman (Suraaj Venjaramoodu) who had arranged her visa and she comes to work in the same house where Usman works as a driver. There is another Indonesian girl working there as a Khaddama. Aswathy’s life is quite difficult in the Gulf, but she endures it all as she has a family to support, back at home in Kerala. .

It was after the sudden death of her husband, shortly after her marriage, that she was forced to take to the Gulf. In the meantime, an affair between Usman and the Indonesian girl is discovered and problems started. Usman is sent away and the Indonesian girl locked up and beaten. On being requested by Usman over phone, Aswathy helps the girl to escape. Aswathy’s problems begin here and at a stage when it all becomes unbearable, she ran off the house. Then begins a new stage for the hopeless Khaddama.

Parallel to the main plot runs the story of a social worker Razack (Sreenivasan), who goes about helping Indians in the Gulf. When he comes to know of the story of Aswathy from a newspaper guy, he goes out searching for her, as she is missing after having reportedly fled her sponsor’s house with money and jewellery. There is also the story of Bharathan (Murali Gopy), who happens to meet Aswathy after she flees her employer. Bharathan has been in the Gulf for about 15 years and has reached nowhere. At a stage his fate gets linked with Aswathy’s. The film connected this in a sensitive manner.

Khaddama thus happens to be a good film enriched with a lot of emotions, and also the theme executed in a neat manner. But it’s not likely to be a big thing at the box office. Heroine-oriented films rarely make it big at the box office in Kerala. The subject is not really the same stuff that we have seen.
