In Indian movies dance is vital as the story. This is so because in India whether you are old or young, good or bad everybody can dance. It’s a nice way to relax and so people want to both watch and dance to catchy tunes. Due to this movies which don’t even have a need for a dance song introduce one in one way or the other. In the past every movie had a female negative lead or the vamp that would wear skimpy colorful clothes and dance for the villains. This brings to mind vamps like Helen, Bindu and Aruna Irani. These dancing divas had a style of their own. Helen was famous for songs like Monica Oh My Darling and Yeh mera dil. Then dancing became a group affair and everybody was expected to dance.

There was an era when dancing was only done by the women. Soon the men were expected to shake a leg too. This was a waterloo for many action heroes. Stars like Dharmendra and his son Sunny Deol are terrible dancers and is very obvious when they dance. Then came in stars like Amitabh, Jeetendra and Rajesh Khanna who could dance something if not very well. It was Mithun Chakraborty who took the stage at that time. He did movies based on dance like Disco Dancer and brought in the disco craze into the country. Dancing then moved to another high when stars like Amir, Salman and Shah Rukh came in. The new generation of actors were all natural dancers. But let’s not forget to give credit to some actors who were not very good dancers but worked very hard to make it big in the dance industry. Topping this chart will be Saif Ali Khan and apna Big B. Saif was called the star with two left feet but after Oole Oole he changed his image completely. Just look at Amitabh Bachchan in Chali Chali or Rock and roll soniye and he will teach you how dance your way gracefully, stylishly and youthfully to success.

When we say dance there are some actresses who are called the goddess of dancing. To name a few lets start with Rekha, Sri devi, Madhuri, Urmila, Karishma and Aishwarya. If you are an actress who can’t dance in bollywood you can survive. So, all the actresses can dance a bit at least. The ones who excel are the ones who can dance gracefully with complete facial expressions and the smile on their faces. Rekha won a national award for Umrao Jaan where she plays a courtesan. This involves very intricate dancing with a different expression for every word. Each of the above mentioned actresses has played roles in major dance movies like Dil to Pagal Hai, Hum apke hain kaun and Devdas. People still can’t get over the magic of Sri Devi’s Na jaane kahaan se aaye hai, Rekha’s Dil cheez kya hai, Madhuri’s Didi tera devar deewaana, Urmila’s rangeela re, Karishma’s Mujhko hue na khabar and Aishwarya’s Crazy kiya re.

Choreography is now the most in thing. The top dance directors now are Saroj Khan, Farah Khan, Vaibhavi Merchant, Bosco and Caesar, Ahmed Khan, Ganesh Hegde and Ganesh Acharya. Each one of these directors has a style of their own. Saroj Khan is the senior most and has many awards and hit songs to her credit. Farah is a very different director and has many unusual songs to her credit like Chaiya Chaiya, which was shot on top of a moving train. She is also the one who brought in the Hritik Roshan style of dancing. She is the one who brought out the best of his dancing abilities in his first movie Kaho Na Pyar hai. Farah and Ahmed slowly graduated from only choreography to directing their own movies too. Farah’s first movie was Main Hoon Na with the king Khan and it was a very big hit.

Ahmed made his debut with Lakeer with Sunny Deol, Sunil Shetty and John Abraham but he wasn’t that lucky and the movie bombed badly. Ganesh Hegde released his own pop album which did okay business. Another choreographer who is exceptional is Shaimak Davar. He runs a lot of dance classes in different cities and if he is in your city better join up. Latest heart throb Shaahid Kapoor was his student and watching him dance is a real pleasure now.

Ganesh Acharya is a director who is so fat but he is talented beyond words. He has choreographed songs for Lagaan and his biggest hit was Koi Aaye Toh Le jaaye with Mamta Kulkarni. Vaibhavi Merchant is the director who is making Hritik Dance to her moves these days. She is a young lady who has proved to the world that anything can be achieved by hard work.

The funda of forced dance sequences in movies is at its peak. If there isn’t place for a dance song in the movie then a special song is shot either to introduce the characters as it was done in Dus or a promotional song is shot like its been done for Kaal. This has also given birth to the concept of the item girl. These girls are only good at dancing and are only used to increase the viewer ship of the movie. The top item girls right now are Rakhi Sawant, Yana Gupta and Isha Kopikar.

Whether it’s a tragic song or a suspence there has to be some form of dance. Bollywood dance is made up all forms of dancing. There are songs like Maar Dala which is in the classic form of dancing and there are songs like Babuji which has no particular style at all.

This is an industry which is going through a very bad phase. Known for making extremely realistic movies this industry was in its peak during the 70s and 80s. With the coming in of satellite television and Video piracy this industry has become sick and is still unable to revive. Stars from Kerala too have migrated and finding value for their talent in the Tamil and Telugu industry.

This was a year fro the Malayalam Actresses in Kollywood. All the hits had a Kerala actress in it. Asin starred in Varalaru History of the godfather,Sandhya In Dishyum, Nayantara in Vallavan, Gopika in yamtan magan.

The Malayalam industry is the industry which has produced great actors like Mamooty and Mohan Lal. It’s this industry which is the main hub for original stories. A lot of Malayalam movies are remade into Tamil and Telugu. Cheran made autograph and he introduced Gopika and Kamala to the Tamil Industry. Stars like Mamooty and Mohan Lal have acted in many Tamil movies. Mamooty’s biggest Tamil hit was Kandukondain Kandukondain.

Asin was the face of the year in 2005 every movie which came around Diwali had her. She starred with Surya in Ghajini, Vikram in Majaa and with Vijay in Sivakasi. All the three movies were hits. Sandhya made her debut with the film kadal and walked off with the best actress award for the film. Gopika has impressed everybody with her simplicity and great eyes. This actress is going places without exposing anything at all. This year was a major year for Nayantara. This actress used act with the senior stars as she too was big built and looked good with them. Look at her this year she has shed off all the extra pounds and is looking sleek in Vallavan and E. Both the movies have been hits this year and she is riding high.

Every movie shooting starts with the word ‘ACTION‘ so, if there is no action, a bollywood movie is not complete. Whether a movie is a romantic triangle, suspense or drama all that is immaterial it has to have an action scene or what we call the fight scene.

In India all said and done the hero will look like the boy next door but he will have super natural powers. Even if he is skinny and all alone he can beat up 20 people at a time. And because he is a hero doesn’t even need any weapons. If he has a weapon all the guys on the receiving hands have to be bleeding and of course the hero too will be bleeding from either a cup on his lip or his forehead.

Each action scene in bollywood is very well planned. It involves a lot of planning and precision and here come in the action directors with their team of stunt men. These stunt men are trained professionals who can jump in the sky, do cart wheels and use many weapons at the same time. They will fight with the hero and get hurt. Where the stunt is dangerous the hero will be replaced by a stunt man who will dress up just like the hero. It’s a tough job as these guys earn a living by taking risk daily. This is the same for all stunt stars all over the world. Only thing different is stunt stars around the world have insurance and in India they are not only far under paid they insurance is either as good as not being there or is not there at all.

Action in bollywood is such that there are many heroes who are known as action heroes and it is very difficult to break their image. Sunny Deol, Dharmendra, Sunil Shetty are few such stars. The new generation of heroes who are coming into the industry all come with great body and a lot of muscles to show. People too only want to watch heroes who look like they can beat up another person.

A lot of training goes into being a great action hero. You have to be able to fight, fly, jump as high as a building, ride horses, Zoom in cars past heavy traffic, ride bike through water, slush etc. If you go to the beaches early in the morning you will a lot of young boys training to do all sort of stunts. Some of the stunt masters have their own academies and heroes go there to train and keep their bodies in shape.

Some of the very popular action movies are listed below. If you are an action film buff then these are a must to have.

    * Sholay starring Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar and Amjad Khan.
* Ghayal starring Sunny Deol, Meenakshi Sheshadiri, OmPuri and Amrish Puri.
* Mohra starring Akshay Kumar, Sunil Shetty, Raveena Tandon, Paresh Rawal and Naseerudin Shah.
* Karma starring Dilip Kumar, Nutan, Jackie Shroff, Anil Kapoor, Naseerudin Shah and Anupam Kher.
* Karan Arjun starring Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Kajol, Mamata Kulkarni and Amrish Puri.
* Vaastav starring Sanjay Dutt, Namrita Shirodkar and Reema Lagoo.
* Dharam Veer starring Dharmendra and Jeetendra.
* Aryan starring Sohail Khan and Sneha Ullal.
* Sabse Bada Khiladi starring Akshay Kumar, Rekha and Raveena Tandon.
* Shahensha starring Amitabh Bachchan and Meenakshi Sheshadiri.

Mehmood is the first thought that will emerge when you think of comedy in bollywood. Comedy has been a vital part of any movie and a lot of movies have been made only on comedy. Star like Ashok Kumar was a natural comedian. In the past the entire movie would be a comedy and there were directors like Hrishikesh Mukherjee who were specialists in these kinds of movies. Then slowly comedy began taking a back seat and today comedy is only a part of the movie. At this time comedians like Johnny Lever, Asrani and Kadar Khan have made a mark for themselves.

During the 80s and early 90s it was the time for stars like Govinda who made a fortune by doing only comedy movies. Now directors like Deepak Tijori tried their hands at comedy and made a remake of a Tamil film but that too bombed at the box office. Director Priya Darshan is the only one who is churning out comedy after comedy and that too all hits. The audience loves Shah Rukh for his comedy in movies like Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge and Pardes. Salman Khan too did good to his sinking career with comedy film Maine Pyar Kyon Kiya.

Every outfit that the stars wear on screen becomes a trend and all people try to wear the same thing. Bollywood costumes are like a religion they catch on real fast. Madhuri’s saree in Hum Apke Hain Kaun sold like hot cakes in the local markets. You can see young boys and girls and find out who is their favorite star. If guys are wearing chains with the words cool on it then they are Shah Rukh fans. If they are wearing low hip jeans nowadays then they are Hritik fans. Girls wearing skirts with words written behind it are Preity fans and those wearing chiffon sarees are Rani Mukherjee fans.

In movies like Hum Apke Hain Kaun, Gajgamini and Devdas the heroines have changed many outfits. It is believed the ghagara worn by Madhuri in Maar Daala weighed thirty kilos. Costume designing was not that important in the past but now every star has his/ her personal dress designer. They go shopping in foreign countries for top brands. Clothes can make or break somebody’s career. So, all stars take the time and effort to wear the best outfits.

Manish Malhotra is a dress designer who designs for all the big stars in Bollywood. Abu Jani, Neeta Lulla, Sandeep Khosla and Reza Shariff were the costume designers who did the designing for Devdas. The saree worn by Aishwarya in Devdas was 8-9 meters long as compared to the usual 6 meters. Costume designing is not only for the heroines. Each look of the heroes nowadays is also designed by costume designers. Hritik has 15 get ups in Dhoom 2 and each one has been well planned. The most difficult costume to wear was the mermaid outfit worn by Shilpa Shetty.

A star wears his make up first and then the costume. Makeup in bollywood is done for all the stars and there is no gender bias. Shah Rukh was the first to have a hair stylist all for himself for Mohabatein. Stars have been known for growing their hair long for some roles and to have chopped their hair for some roles. Salman went Bald for Tere Naam. Hritik grew his hair for Krrish and Dhoom 2. Aamir grew his hair and moustache for Mangal Pandey. Kajol supported short hair for Dushman where she played a double role. Most difficult and time consuming make up done in bollywood have been the tiger transformation make up done on Rahul Roy and the different get ups done for Hritik in Dhoom 2.

India has still not reached a stage where body wears make up. Women love make up but still prefer their natural looks. A lot of women just don’t wear any make up of any sought but then bollywood stars have their own charisma. Every individual is a fan of some star or the other and so as long as there is make up in bollywood there will be a big market for make up in the country too. India is an ever-growing country and the cosmetics industry is growing in full swing in India too.

Kaajal for the eyes and mehndi for the hands may be the Indian Look for women but hey nothing is only for the women these days. Men too wear a lot of kaajal and mehndi is no more restricted to the hands. Mehndi tattoos are made on the bellies, arms and the back. Again jewels are not only for the women. Men wear earrings too these days. Salman Khan looks cool with an earring on one of his ears. Piercing their belly buttons, eyes and chin used to be the fashion in the west but it has become such a craze in India too.

Urmila Matondkar brought in Hair colours when she did Rangeela. Still today hair coloring is a big thing and every body is doing it. Streaks to funky styles anything that’s different is in. Before Urmila it was Dimple Kapadia who brought in the fashion of wavy hair cut in steps. Akshay Khanna brought in the style of the short crop and Rahul Roy brought in the long haired look. Aamir brought in the Goat beard look and Abhishek the hair band look.

Make up and costumes are tools which these stars have in their hands which the use to mesmerize the crowd. Guess who benefits from all this copy cat business the garments and accessories businesses. Whether a big manufacturer or small each one brings out the ditto copy of what ever the hero or heroine wears and that too in different prize ranges. If the Dhoom 2 collection is on sale at the pantaloons, Sarees worn by Ash and Madhuri are available at every garment store in any bazaar in any city or town of the country. Accessories too are copied without any hesitation. A college bag carried by a heroine in one of the movies is a transparent bag. Next thing walk into any college and you will find similar bags every where. High heeled shoes in funky colours to pretty little hand bags which can only hold few credit cards, to neck long earrings everything is in. A star has it and is wearing it then I have to have it too is he style mantra of the latest generation.

Love make up costumes then just search a ladies hand bag and you will be surprised what all you can find in there??????

The 7Th of July 1896 is a landmark in the history of Indian cinema. This was the first time a movie was shown in India. It took several years and then in 1913 Dadasaheb Phalke made Raja Harishchandra which was the first Indian movie to be made. It was 3700 feet long and was based on the Mahabharata. The movies were black and white with no sound in the beginning. Then came the movies with sounds. Alam Ara was the first movie with sound and it was released in 1931. This movie was a super hit.

Then emerged the films in colours. This happened only in the late 1950s. Colours brought in tremendous growth in this industry. This was a time when the musicals and a melodrama were seen everywhere. Stars like Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar and Dev Anand each created a mark for themselves. 1960s and 1970s brought in action movies and stars like Dharmendra, Jeetendra and Rajesh Khanna who were known as action heroes. Another landmark in the Indian film industry took place in 1975 and that was the launch of the 70mm movies. Sholay the first movie to be released as a 70mm movie didn’t do good business in the first week. The movie became a major block buster later as slowly slowly people went in to see the movie. The 1980s the heroes became more blood thirsty and every movie had the famous dialogue “kuttey main tera khoon pee jaunga”. This was the time when Amitabh Bachchan was known as the angry young man.

By the end of the century all the viewers wanted to see were family dramas and comedy films. This was when movies like Hum Apke hain Kaun and Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge did sky rocketing business. This movies had formulas which were technically all wrong but they were the biggest blockbusters of their times. These movies were extra long, had twelve to thirteen song and dance sequences and had very very simple stories. But these movies worked because the stories were very real and the movies had lots of emotions to show. People laughed and cried and enjoyed these movies at the same time.

Now in the current era the latest trend is remaking. A lot of directors are making remakes of major hits of the past. Some of the recent releases have been Devdas, Don and Umrao Jaan. People have become choosy and it is not easy to predict which movie will be a hit and which flop. The audience is looking for creativity and new thoughts and ideas. This has opened the movie making industry to whole new world of film making.

A lot of new directors are now getting a chance to show the world their different and modern stories. These directors are not scared to experiment. The bigger the risk the bigger are the dividends. Each director is now ready to show the world the latest in relationships. Whether its divorce or live in relationships nothing is a taboo these days.

During the 70s and 80s kissing scenes were considered as cheap and publicity stunts. Nowadays kissing is too common in everyday life and the audience has accepted kissing as normal. But in the last three years the hottest sensation has been the smooching scenes. Some movies where this has been handled very maturely have been accepted by the audience but where it is down right cheap the viewers too have rejected it.

In India to keep a certain amount of control on movie making the censor board is very active. The members of the board are both male and female. Each movie has to get a certificate from this board before the movie is released. If it’s a U/A rating its open for viewer ship by all but if its an A rating then its only for viewers 18 and above.

Movies in India are made on both are a large scale and small scale. There are the big production houses and then there are small budget movie makers. Movies from production houses like Johar, Yash Raj, Mukta arts and the Kapoors are normally very big budget movies. Some of the most expensive movies in Bollywood are Dhoom 2, Don and topping the list is Devdas with a lavish budget of 100 crores. There are other movies like Iqbal, Hazaaron Khwaishain Aise etc. Whether a movie is big or small it has to be judged by the viewers. The audience has become choosy and the number of hits in a year has now gone down.

The previous year 2005 was a bad year for the industry. Most of the films bombed at the box office. The audience was sick of watching movies which have been copied from some Hollywood film or a remake of some regional films. 2010 came as a breath of fresh air. The year started with Aamir’s magic and ended with Hritik’s talent.

A year where each movie that came tried to do better than its predecessor. A year filled with dance and foot tapping music. A year filled with romance, suspense, action, drama and comedy. So now lets see what all has this year given us.

The Indian film industry is called Bollywood because it is based in Bombay. Everybody who goes to Bombay or now known as Mumbai wants to see this ever growing industry and its stars.

Movies in India are basically made with a lot of spices. In India a movie has to have song, dance, romance, thrill, suspense, comedy, action, family drama etc. People in India work for ten hours a day and that too during the main part of the day and so many of them return to a home with no entertainment. The only available entertainment is movies. Whether a business tycoon or a cycle rickshaw driver all want to watch movies. So when a movie is made the makers have to keep in mind both the masses and the classes.

Indian cinema has improved drastically and now the audience is very mature too. They still want song and dance but not the running around tree sequences. So now there is a new market for item songs. This is where a nice fast track is made only for a great dancer to dance and increase the sales. Some of the top songs have been Babuji zara dhere chalo, khallas etc.

Movies were made particularly for the masses and the multiplex crowd. But now the viewers want to see good movies with great stories. Earlier the hero carried the entire movie on his shoulders but now the load is evenly spread. A movie will do well even if you don’t have a great star cast but have a great story and your actors do a job. A good example for this would be Khosla Ka Ghosla. There is nobody you can call the hero of the film but it’s realistic and humorous.

In three hours the audience wants to laugh, cry and be excited and so it’s a tough task for the directors but then hats off to all Indian directors as they come up with something spicy enough to fulfill the needs of all types of viewers.

Each movie has the main story and a lot of other small stories that build around it. At times in stories there may not be any scope for comedy. A lot of directors use other characters and bring in another funny plot. This comedy has no link with the movies. In the past people accepted this kind of comedy too but nowadays the audience accepts comedy only when it’s a part of the main story.

People who want to watch emotions are very particular about the quality of the emotions too. If you can’t cry or deliver the dialogues properly the audience rejects the star immediately. The stars have to be convincing enough. This is where the director’s ability is tested. The comedy has to be timed properly and the tears have to be realistically shed.

Movies in India have been made with a lot of respect for family values and traditions. Every movie which shows any function has to do it in the right way. If there is a wedding song in a movie it not only becomes a hit. It becomes a part of every Indian wedding. Movies like Hum Saath Saath Hain and Hum Apke Hain Kaun have been very very big hits because each and every scene of the movie is actually what happens in joint families and in weddings.

A movie when made in India has to be made in such a way that both a 5 year kid and an 85 year old grand father both have to enjoy it. It has to have a great story, touching performances, lovely music, breath taking locations, great dance steps and of course a really bad villain whom the hero has to bash up even if he is on the death bed.

This is true bollywood ishtyle where anything can happen. The hero can beat up any number of guys. The heroine can cry without glycerin. The villain is always ugly to look at. The police will never reach on time to save people. It’s only up to the hero to do all the running around, saving and bashing up. The heroines will always be wearing great makeup even if its in the middle of the night. Mother in laws can’t be good and the daughter in law will only worry about everybody else’s happiness and not hers. This is apna bollywood with all these errors but still it is the biggest film industry in the world. Nearly thrice the number of movies is made each year than the number of days in a year. If you are a movie buff then there is no place like bollywood because there is nothing that you can’t find here.
