Ranveer Singh to play modern day Devdas in Hindi remake of Arjun Reddy?

Arjun Reddy, a modern-day retelling of Devdas, from the South featuring a great coming-of-age performance by Telugu star Vijay Devarakonda is all set to be remade in Hindi.

Vijay Devarakonda’s performance rocked Andhra Pradesh’s collective conscience and for the Hindi remake, makers want to cast Ranveer Singh in the lead role.

Says a source, “The producers have met Ranveer and he has shown a lot of interest in the project. They will show him the film in the next couple of days and a decision will be made.” Like Devdas, the movie’s hero — Arjun Reddy — struggles with anger issues and descends into a hellish blackhole of drugs, alcohol and self-destruction after a broken relationship.

The doomed lover
Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novel Devdas, written in 1917, has been reinterpreted many times on celluloid. The first Devdas was made in 1935 and was a Bengali film that starred KL Saigal. Bollywood was equally smitten by the doomed lover.

Devdas (1955)
Dilip Kumar starred in the title role, while Suchitra Sen played Parvati in this movie directed by the legendary director Bimal Das. Vyjayanthimala played Chandramukhi. Kumar found himself facing acute depression post the shoot of the movie and even had to seek psychiatric help to overcome it.

Devdas (2002)
Made by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, this magnum opus was one of the biggest hits of 2002. While Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan played Devdas and Paro, respectively, Madhuri Dixit-Nene was Chandramukhi. Deviating from the original where the two ladies never cross paths, this one did not only see them meet, but also dance to Dola Re Dola together.

Dev D
Anurag Kashyap’s contemporary interpretation of the classic novel saw Abhay Deol playing Dev aka Devdas. While Mahie Gill played Paro, Kalki Koechlin’s character with half-European descent was based on the lines of Chandramukhi. The movie was loved by the audience and critics alike.

Dev DD
The webseries Dev DD presents a female version of the novel. It sees its protagonist, Dev DD, aka Devika Dharam Dwivedi, a woman who is unabashed about her sex life.
