The Zoya Factor Movie Review: Dulquer Salmaan is the X-factor in this cute rom-com

Honestly, I did not have much expectations when I saw the trailer of The Zoya Factor. While rom-coms are films that have great repeat value, of late, we have not seen any memorable ones in Bollywood. The industry is slowly moving away from love stories to biopics and newer content, which is also great. The Zoya Factor is a rom-com, which projected itself as one of those stories that leave you in disbelief but make you smile at the end of it. So, does it succeed? Here is our review…

What’s it about?

Zoya Solanki (Sonam Kapoor) is born on the day when India won the 1983 World Cup. She is considered lucky for cricket by her family but is a complete loser personally and professionally. On an assignment with the Indian cricket team she catches the eye of captain Nikhil Khoda (Dulquer Salmaan) who instantly falls for her. Slowly, her luck starts working for team India and the boys start believing in their lucky mascot. However, Nikhil Khoda does not have faith in luck and believes in hard work. The two separate due to misunderstandings followed by a happy ending.

What is hot

There are three things that work greatly for the film. Firstly, it is the presence of Dulquer Salmaan. His character of Nikhil Khoda is earnest, attractive, flirtatious and intense and DQ nails every shade of it. He is a charm and don’t be surprised if you hear women gushing after the show. Abhishek Sharma, the director holds the wafer-thin fantastical plot together with his deft direction. Sanjay Kapoor and Sikander Kher are a hoot and deliver the comic punches brilliantly. Now, coming to Sonam Kapoor aka Zoya, the actress is cute in the romantic scenes with Dulquer but goes over the top at places. Also, a mention of the two who do the Hindi cricket commentary in the film. They are terrific. Utsav Bhagat edits the film well while the screenplay by Neha Rakesh Sharma and Pradhuman Singh is also good.

What is not

The film has a wafer-thin plot and you can only enjoy it if you treat it as a rom-com. It is not a content-driven film. Also, the love story between Nikhil and Zoya is too rushed. The music could have been better. Only Maheroo stands out.

BL Verdict

The Zoya Factor is a sweet and cute rom-com. It is the perfect chick flick for the weekend where you can go with your gal pals and drool over Dulquer Salmaan.
