Zaira Wasim

Zaira Wasim is a television and film actress from Jammu and Kashmir.

Her role as Geeta Phogat in Aamir Khan’s movie, Dangal, brought national attention to the actress. Prior to this role, she had been in a couple of national television ads. One of the commercials was for Tata Sky, a satellite television provider in India, and the other was for Nokia Lumia, a Nokia smartphone model. Both commercials were filmed in India.

Wasim has been cast in Khan’s next production, “Secret Superstar. After meeting with the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Mehbooba Mufti, she posted an open apology letter on her Facebook page, where she stated that she wasn’t proud of what she was doing and asked Kashmiri youth not to follow in her footsteps or consider her as a role model. She deleted the note shortly afterwards and shared another post where she stated that no one forces her into writing the letter and she just wanted to make sure that people were not hurt by her actions. Various news outlets stated that she might have apologized either due to threats, being trolled on social media or due to a picture showing her meeting with Mufti clubed together in stark contrast with a picture of Insha Mushtaq, a girl blinded by pellets during the 2016 Kashmir unrest. The reported harassment of her were condemned by multiple celebrities and politicians.
